Overcoming Love

A story of Nam from Vietnam

On hearing quarrelling one day in front of her home, Mrs. Nam went out to see what was happening. An older woman was screaming and pulling the hair of a younger woman. Mrs. Nam was horrified at this cruelty and began to despise the old woman.  Mrs. Nam didn’t see her for a long time, but then she found out from a neighbor that the 79 year old was very ill and was dying. She also heard that the woman was experiencing great remorse for her ruthless ways. The Lord began to speak to Mrs. Nam’s heart about going over to minister to her. He showed her that just as she had been saved, this desperate woman needed someone to help her find salvation.

Mrs. Nam arrived home one day and heard the Buddhist monks chanting in front of the old lady’s house, all the preparations were being made for her funeral.  Mrs. Nam still didn’t feel any love in her heart, nonetheless she went over to the old woman’s house and with all the courage she could muster up she said, “Do you know Jesus loves you? Do you know me and have you heard of all that Jesus has done for me?” Then she gently stroked her on her cold cheek and in the supernatural compassion of the Lord, she kissed her. In that instant the old woman’s eyes opened and she asked in a faint voice, “Why do you love me so much?” 

In the evening Mrs. Nam went to visit her again. She knew she needed to lead the woman to the Lord, but she also felt very awkward as the whole family was gathered around her just waiting for her to breathe her last breath.  As Mrs. Nam was turning to leave, the daughter who knew she was a Christian asked her to pray for her mom. Mrs. Nam knew this was her chance. She thought, ‘I’ll pray for her, then I’ll lead the woman to through the sinner’s prayer.”  The sick woman agreed and repeated the prayer.

As the Christian woman was about to leave for the second time, the old woman held on to her hand and wouldn’t let go. This time, Mrs. Nam knew this was her signal from the Lord that she should go ahead and pray for healing as well. Everyone in the room knew of the doctor’s report saying that every organ in the woman’s body had quit functioning, but Nam went ahead and laid her hand on the belly which was greatly swollen and commanded it to go down and for healing to come to the entire body.

The next day, on her way to church, Mrs. Nam stopped in for a visit. In her natural mind she doubted about what she would find. She even thought to herself, she may be dead. But as soon as she stepped in, she was greeted by a strong voice, saying, “Hello!” The old woman had gained an incredible amount of strength and her swelling had begun to go down.  

After church, Mrs. Nam decided to stop in again. As she arrived, there was much commotion around the house and she noticed the Buddhist monks chanting again. She thought,” Oh, no… what has happened… did she die?” But soon enough Mrs. Nam saw the great miracle she had asked for; the old lady was sitting up and announced that she had been already walking around the house. In spite human weaknesses, the Lord was determined to use Mrs. Nam to save the old lady.
